Another one of Spitz's classic songs. This song is the theme song to a famous 90s Japanese drama series called "Hakusen Nagashi" (flowing white line). In response to the request for a song to be made, Kusano-san took only 2-3 days to write this song after reading the scenario for the drama. Although it was written to be the drama's theme song, the band also chose it to be their 8th single. (now they have nearly 40 singles O__O;;; amazing~)

This song was released in 1994, to mediocre success. After the drama aired in 1996, the song was revived as a smash hit and was the first Spitz song to both chart at no.1 in the Oricon charts, and to sell more than a million copies in it's first week. This song is still commonly played at school graduations in Japan, due to the impact of the drama (which was about high-school life). The song also won the 8th Japanese Academy Award for being the best song in a television drama in 1996.

This song makes me feel so old nostalgic! Look at how young, fresh, innocent and clean they look in that video! This was even before Miwa-san started wearing his trademark sunglasses. It's inspiring to see how far they've come from their boy-ish blue-sky 90s image to what they are now.

The PV was shot by Takeuchi Tetsuro, who shot the majority of their PVs from their "Hibari no Kokoro" days up until "Masayume". There's a lot of history behind this song. Please enjoy the translation. \(^O^)/

I Should Be Able To Fly Even Into The Sky

I remain unable to lower of this mild, childish fever
The fear of God's shadow
I kept a knife that appears to not suit me hidden
It consoled me with it's humorous song

While the colours fade
While the cracks show
I seek for everything that shines

The miracle that I met you makes my chest feel like it's overflowing
I'm sure now, I should be able to freely fly even into the sky
The moist tears from my dreams will flow into the sea
Truly, I want you to be smiling next to me

My trump card had been blatant lies
They were destroyed on the night of the full moon

The fleeting scent of your hair when you swing it
Woke me up from a deep sleep

The miracle that I met you makes my chest feel like it's overflowing
I'm sure now, I should be able to freely fly even into the sky
Though this sparkling, garbage-like world may reject us
Truly, I want you to be smiling next to me

The miracle that I met you makes my chest feel like it's overflowing
I'm sure now, I should be able to freely fly even into the sky
The moist tears from my dreams will flow into the sea
Truly, I want you to be smiling next to me

This song was written and composed with Jimi Hendrix's style and themes in mind. Even the original title was 'Jimi Hen'. I find this song to be funny, due to seeing a live video of the performance, where Miwa-san exaggerates on the 'oh yeah' parts of the song. (laughs)

Your dolphin is cold to me
Your dolphin is cold to me
All the time, oh yeah
Just like ice
I take refuge inside the fire when we collide

The lizard's tail just won't die
The lizard's tail just won't die
As if it's forcing me to do something about it, oh yeah
That's why the love from that day fell apart

The morning haze melts away
As I chase after the crescent moon
Without caring that I have scars
Isn't it nice to be able to swim freely

If you get separated from the herd
And you want to collect the fossils
Without caring that I have scars
Isn't it nice to be able to swim freely

This song is easily distinguished from the rest of Spitz's songs due to it being an Audio Oriented Rock track, which is a rock movement that uses calm and soft vocals instead of a harsh sound. It is almost the exact opposite of punk rock, which focuses on youth and energy. It instead is aimed towards adults and is a calm and tame version of rock. Miwa-san said that "This is a fresh song that Spitz has never experimented with before." even before the lyrics were written.

This song is the B-side of "Kimi ga Omoide Ni Naru Mae Ni"

Summer is over

The scaly clouds in the distance continues to move
The cool-looking guy with the neckwear hurries on again
His collarbone was tanned by this over-flowing power
I believe it will stay unchanged

Another summer ends without even making any sound
A summer that's too hot ends without even making any sound
Even after I dove into the depths

Another summer ends without even making any sound
A summer that's too hot ends without even making any sound
Even after I dove into the depths

The scaly clouds in the distance continues to move
The cool-looking guy with the neckwear hurries on again

Your strong, fox-like eyes
Cheerfully pierces even my distant memories
A dust of sand rises as it was kicked up when I ran
Colliding into your wet hair and lively white shirt

This song is Spitz's 12th single released in 7/7/1995 and reached the 2nd spot on Oricon's weekly charts, selling nearly 100 million copies. The title when written in kanji is "涙がキラリ☆". The members decided to add the star into the title due to the single's release on the same day as the tanabata festival, in hopes that the song would help liven up the festival even further.

*Tanabata is a Japanese star festival.

I believe the song is about the legend behind Tanabata festival and also it's festive atmosphere. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (also known as the stars Vega and Altair, respectively). According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar.

浴衣の袖のあたりから 漂う夏の景色
浮かんで消えるガイコツが 鳴らすよ恋のリズム
映し出された思い出は みな幻に変わってくのに
何も知らないこの惑星は 世界をのせて まわっているよ

Tears are Sparkling.

The bat flies into the dusk the moment it awakens
As if to not let it go out, i'll keep the key in the keyhole

Now, i've decided to let the memory of you stay in a corner
My gaze remains timid
As we stare at each other until the night turns to dawn

The same tears are sparkling
Even if I were to be an angel
The two of us are still waiting for a star
The sadness tightens inside us
A faint light connects my heart to yours

A summer-time landscape drifts in the air
From the sleeves of a yukata
The skeleton floats by and disappears
Beating to the rhythm of love

The scenes in my memories are flashing
Even though everyone's illusions will change
This planet that does not know anything
Keeps spinning, oblivious to our world

The same tears are sparkling
Even if I were to be an angel
The truth is, I kinda want to touch you
Bring on the southern wind
Burn this time that will never return into my memories

The same tears are sparkling
Even if I were to be an angel
The two of us are still waiting for a star
The sadness tightens inside us
A faint light connects my heart to yours

This song is the B-side of Spitz's 12th single, "Namida ga Kirari". The title "Luna Luna" came from Tezuka Osamu's manga called "Black Jack", where there's a white lion that turned gold named Luna-luna. The title apparently has no meaning, and the members simply chose the name because of how it sounds. The song was originally a candidate as a single. The temporary title was "Koi no Armadillo" (Armadillo of Love).

There's a small pain that I can't forget
With the power of loneliness, I stopped swimming
Beyond the mist, a white flower disappears quickly
When I reach the end, I'm already too tired to think
Like a bee without a care in the world
Your anarchist eyes begins to swirl

The two of us will still be entangled
Even if we fall out of our dreams
We can still fly away
Until we steal all of the new excitement
Luna luna

I washed away the night of the sheep with beer
As I was leaning against the cold wall
Making fun of your sweet obscenity in the spooky song of evil

Don't stop being like this
Don't try to hold back the soft murmurs
Look at you, you're radiant
The mysterious event will continue on for you
Luna luna

The two of us will still be entangled
Even if we fall out of our dreams
We can still fly away
Until we steal all of the new excitement

"Shiosai-chan" was at first only intended to be a temporary title, but it ended up becoming the official title instead. The lyrics of this song uses a strong Hakata dialect from Fukuoka prefecture, which is vocalist Kusano Masamune's hometown.

I find the story of the song to be funny, and the song is very cheerful and upbeat and reminds me of Spitz's "Hoshi no Kakera/Crispy" days. I think it's about a person who made the mistake of being friendly to everyone and is now desperately trying (and failing) to run away from an annoying and unpredictable person called "Shiosai-chan" who torments his life and refuses to let go.

Shioisai is a japanese word used to describe the roar of the ocean.

But now I want your turnabout games to go away

Shiosai Shiosai Shiosai-chan

I was behaving with a group mentality
I keep on being fooled by your rotating words
I just want to quit at the 'x' mark that's burnt black

I want to fly I want to fly I want to fly away
I want to fly I want to fly I want to fly away

If I can't wake up from this nightmare, even for a little while
I want to breathe in the scent of the ordinary wind again
This shimmering and fancy world
Simply deserves to be made fun of

At that time even the spirits were crying
Clapping hands in time with the beat
The lucky candidate for a quarrel is

Shiosai Shiosai Shiosai-chan

In an oddly maniac-like poor village
I licked and tasted nectar for the first time
If I were to know that I'm still hanging in there

That I'd never die never die never die
That I'd never die never die never die

If only there's anything that is worthwhile
For just this moment, will you really, please, just leave me alone?
On my own, I want to push the same old boring boat off the coast

I saw your spiky haircut by dumb luck
And it's good to show a smile from time to time

This song is entirely composed and produced by the band. Esperanza is Spanish for 'hope'.

I think this song is very relaxing and makes me think of walking along empty, crystal clean beaches (with a giant glass ball rolling down a hill in the background, lol). I believe the lyrics to this song is about comparing human beings to a glass ball and seeing how fragile and weak we can look. But even though the glass ball looks like it's going to crack at any second, it doesn't. I think the title 'esperanza' is the protagonist of the song's hope that humans would stop being transparent and fragile in order to find the distorted shape of happiness.

I pinched at it's foul language
And delivered it to the dangerous zone

Spitz's interview with Excite Music about the creation and concept behind their 12th album, SazanamiCD. The members also discuss their 20th anniversary and how it affected them.

Untitled

-So I attended the 20th anniversary that was held in Zepp Tokyo last August but when Kusano-san stepped on the stage with Kreva (Japanese rapper), did he think "Why do I feel like an outsider?" because it was Spitz's event?

Kusano: No no no no. (laughs) Yeah. But the concert hall really did became the dog's living room. (Spitz is a breed of dog)

-(laughs). The "Rock Rock Konnichiwa!" event was full of character too. The events were centred around Spitz, but each artist had a long time performing on stage. I thought that the entire place had a strong "Spitz" atmosphere.

Kusano: To put it simply, we wanted to watch other musicians perform and help them showcase their music, which is why half of the event was other musicians performing. It was almost like we were just a part of the audience most of the time.

-Because of that, Spitz's performing time wasn't that long.

Kusano: Yeah. That's right.

- Mr.Children would performing on stage for at least two hours on events like "ap bank fes." and "Bank Band", for example.

Kusano: Is that so! (surprised) It's like that, huh... they must work really hard. Us on the other hand, we've decided to take a little bit more of a relaxed stance.

-Unlike Kreva's stage performance, once Spitz appeared, the atmosphere would immediately seem more relaxed.

Kusano: Though when the spotlight started to shine down on me, I was actually really nervous. (laughs)

-Because it's the band's 20th anniversary, didn't you feel like it's necessary to do more events, like "Rock Rock Konnichiwa Plus!" or something like that?

Kusano: That's right, precisely. I was wondering "Should we try doing various other things?", but it's not easy to find the time and space to do anything.

Miwa: That sounds like an excuse. (laughs)

Kusano: I thought about it a lot. At first, it was "It's going to be the 20th anniversary in two years!" and before I knew it, "It's going to be the 20th anniversary next year!" and we were still just vaguely talking about it. When this year arrived and it's nearly our 20th anniversary, I started panicking and I ended up being stuck in a pinch. There were so many things... that I didn't do.

Tamura: It's like someone's birthday party, but the person in question didn't do anything about it (laughs). I think it's the same feeling.

-That's definitely right. (laughs) Well, to talk about "Sazanami CD". It's like... it feels like it has a lot of voices that echoes.

Kusano: Exactly like what ripples (sazanami is japanese for ripples) are, don't you think?

-Your last work, "Souvenir" had a sense of stability or some sort. But that might be because the production was done continuously instead of intermittently.

Kusano: The direction we went with the songs, aside from the arrangement, I don't know... somehow I feel like it may have had the same direction that we found in "Souvenir". In that sense, this time, it's easier to unravel what is good or what is bad. I think the each of the songs in this album has an independent atmosphere (when compared to "Souvenir").

-The recording part was divided into several sessions and took a long time to be completed. To some extent, was the overall design of the album visible from the start?

Kusano: There's no blueprint for this album. With "Souvenir", the recording work was unexpectedly stressful and we had to focus really hard on it because our schedules were really tight. (smiles wryly) With a little more room this time, the only stressful aspect is the creative aspect, I thought it was good that we're able to make this album with as little stress as possible. Other than that, since our producer, Kameda Seiji-san and our sound engineer Takayama Tohru-san are so popular, the adjustment of schedules became difficult to agree on (laughs).

- I see. By the way, the beginning until the very ending of this album, the songs gave off a very determined feeling. I believe it was arranged this way? The first song, "Boku no Guitar", could you already see the image and intention of the song just by depending on the lyrics?

Kusano: I guess so, maybe because it was the first track, the sound just mysteriously arrived on it's own to me. Originally, it had an image of a lonely singer singing at the side of the streets. Someone that's a little lonely, like a pathetic person who is struggling through an unrequited love and has a bad habit of being a megalomaniac. But even though I created this song while imagining that kind of person, because it became the first track, the nuances that arrived as the song progresses became something mysterious to me.

-Somehow, it has a feeling like a morning glory. Like you're just saying "let's just go along with this aura!" (laughs)

Kusano: That's right. (laughs)

Tamura: When I got to hear the song on Kusano's demo tape, it wasn't this dramatic. It had more of a lonely feel. From that, I started considering the song's structure, Kameda-san's ideas, and tried to match the two together during the recording process. But when Takayama joined in, the world of the song just seemed to expand even further. When we were recording, I didn't even think about things like what should be the first track, but as we progressed I thought "We have only one candidate for the first track" and this song was the only one I could think of.

The title means "Madder" which is a common plant-based red dye.

The temporary title of this song was "Koharu" (late autumn). I think the both the temporary title and the final title really suits the lyrics, that has a strong red-coloured atmosphere and image of sitting inside while looking at the reddish sunset outside.

This song along with "Horou Kamome wa Doko Made mo", "Iroha" and "8823" was mixed in America, but the sound source was remixed when the band returned to Japan. The sound source that was mixed in America was recorded using an analog board.

[Kanji]

[Romaji]

[Translation]

Madder.

There's a single new song during a sad day
Should I walk away from it?

Though the forecast said it would be sunny
But outside there's a hazy redness
Should I let myself be covered by the sunset?

Though it may look like trash, don't throw it away
Wipe away your river of tears

There's a single new song during a sad day
Should I walk away from it?

Thinking about where her body is
As I go along the road that leads us back to each other

There's a single new song during a sad day
Should I walk away from it?

But outside there's a hazy redness
Should I let myself be covered by the sunset?
